Digital Camera 101

How to get the most from your camera

  1. Read the manual (really!)

  2. Read the manual again - and try every feature (eventually...)

  3. Read about digital photography and digital image editing (some good books here or here.)

  4. Participate in the social networking site of your choice/camera - there's one (or more) for every manufacturer - try a Google/Yahoo/MSN search for:  "Your_Camera_Type users" (i.e.  "Nikon users"); note that many of these boards/web-sites are not sponsored/supported by manufacturers so much information is opinionated and hopefully based on real experience with the gear

  5. Watch your manufacturer's web site(s) for news, information and tips

  6. Experiment! Experiment! Experiment! - you will learn the most from your own explorations with the equipment

With/On your computer

  1. Establish a folder to place all of your images

  2. Create sub-folders to help organize your images (i.e.  C:\photos\2007\family, C:\photos\2007\vacation, etc.)

  3. Your camera purchase probably included software to help you organize, print, store (backup to CD/DVD) your images - try it  - it may meet your needs

  4. If you are more serious about creating images then explore professional level software like:  Aperture (Mac), Adobe Lightroom (Mac & PC), and Photoshop.

  5. Unless you have special needs then programs like Aperture or Lightroom may be all that you need

  6. Inkjet (or other) PC image Printing - again, try the software for image/photo printing that came with your camera/printer - experiment!  with papers and inks 

You will learn the most from experimenting with your equipment - as long as you reflect/evaluate on the results.  I suggest that your set aside dedicated time for this - don't try it when you are trying to capture the family group photo (you may have a rebellion on your hands!)

Training/Private Instruction

For those folks who might be tech-challenged I would be happy to provide private or group instruction covering digital photography (getting the most from your cameras) or digital asset management (D.A.M. - all the steps/things that your need to take to use/print/store/archive your digital images.)  Please use the contact link to express your interest.  This page provides links to a number of books that you may find helpful.
