The Sentient Bean Photo Portrait Gallery
In true coffee house tradition the Sentient Bean is a local
gathering place for good food, your favorite Java blend, for relaxation and for performance events. My
thanks to Kelli, Kristin and the staff at 'the Bean' for working with me on this
project - you can read more about them on the Sentient
Bean web site. The Sentient Bean is a wonderful venue for small performances -
intimate with reasonable acoustics and relaxed seating. I encourage you to
check out their schedule and drop by for visit.
Notes about the images
-
Part of the
challenge (for me) with the project is dealing with the changes in lighting -
each performer seems to prefer a different amount or arrangement of lighting.
-
Many of the
images are not sharp - while there are some reasonably sharp still
portraits
many of the images are soft - they are an attempt to create motion portraits that capture
the visual motions of both the venue and the performers. Generally
speaking each image will contain some item that is sharp - this provides a
reference point for viewing.
-
The ISO (digital camera film speed) will vary,
perhaps even during the same event; due to the use of some high ISO
settings many of the images will be grainy in appearance, especially
when enlarged
-
While it is possible to edit images to
extremes, I tend to limit post-processing to typical changes
like: white balance (you will note different color casts in
these images based on this), +/- 1-2 stops of exposure change, small
adjustment to contrast as well as brightness and applying sharpening -
sharpness will vary greatly depending upon the type of image files that the
cameras are generating (which varies depending upon the settings in the
cameras) as well as which camera lenses I am using. These images
are not designed for printing - please contact me if you are interested in
prints.
-
Using digital cameras I shoot both RAW and JPEG
images (or both.) While the largest images in this online collection
may appear to be large, they are, in fact, scaled down
versions of the original files. The largest online versions of these
files are less than 200KB while the original files range from 6-16MB.
-
In some cases I have used digital zoom. This is
an in-camera feature that allows me to both crop and enlarge an image on the
spot. The resulting images tend to be very noisy.
In general, digital zoom is not a camera feature that I prefer
but it does allow for some immediate and interesting results.
-
In general I will shoot 50-250 images per visit to the Sentient
Bean. This online collection is a sample of this body of work and
it may not include images covering all of the events or performers.
The galleries contain ~40-50 images per collection and are ordered
by month. I suggest that you use a cable or DSL connection to view them.
By default you will see both the small and medium size images when you open
these pages - LARGER images are available if you use the Flash
controls below the largest image (i.e. click on the 'white box' or see below for
additional viewing suggestions.)
